The Mexican filmmaker will adapt the novel ‘The Buried Giant’ by Kazuo Ishiguro, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017.
After the success of his own version of Pinocchio -nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film– , Guillermo del Toro will once again collaborate with Netflix for a new animated feature film . It will be the screen adaptation of The Buried Giant , the fantasy novel by British writer and Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro.
The novel tells the story of Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple living in a fictional England and set in a time after the reign of King Arthur in which no one can retain long-term memories.
Del Toro will serve as the primary director and producer, and is also writing alongside Dennis Kelly ( Matilda: The Musical ). Similar to Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio , stop-motion specialist studio ShadowMachine will also be the main filming location.
A third Oscar?
Scott Stuber, president of Netflix’s film sector, announced that it will be another great animated film by Del Toro, a filmmaker who has already won the Oscar for Best Picture and also for Best Director for The Shape of Water, and who is now aiming to his third statuette for the brilliant Pinocchio , which he co-directed with Marcos Gustafson ( Más allá del jardín ).
“Guillermo del Toro is a visionary as a filmmaker and a master of his craft ,” Stuber said. “We couldn’t be more proud of his prestigious recognition for his Pinocchio , and we’re pleased to continue our creative partnership as he develops his next project with Netflix.”
The director himself also expressed: ” The buried giant will continue my animation partnership with Netflix and our quest to use stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and an even greater responsibility for me to direct this script Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel . ”
Among his best films
Pinocchio is one of Guillermo del Toro’s most important projects in his career as a filmmaker . It is his own version of the classic tale, which has already had more than one adaptation but which achieves the unimaginable: reimagining a story that has been heard a thousand times and turning it into a true masterpiece.
The wooden puppet becomes a real boy in a context as complex as 1930s Italy and could be said to be the protagonist of a hand-carved movie .
Since its release, the film has remained at the top of Netflix’s global movie charts, with more than 50 million hours watched in its first 28 days on the platform.

The feature film has just won the BAFTA for Best Animated Film along with another series of awards, which could point to a greater triumph at the Film Academy Awards, which are held on March 13.
